The City of Geneva is a community of 21,393 located in the west suburbs of the Chicago metro area. The community is known for its historic charm, recreational amenities, and the Third Street retail district. The community is served by the Metra Union Pacific West Line and is located just north of the I-88 corridor. As the City Planner, I am the designated staff liaison for the Development Staff Review Team and Planning and Zoning Commission. Day to day responsibilities of the City Planner include: managing short and long-term municipal planning projects, coordinating City of Geneva Staff review of all development projects, directing applicants through the City of Geneva land use entitlement process, drafting staff reports for the Planning & Zoning Commission and City Council, and managing the Community Development Department page of the City’s website.

The City of Kirksville is a growing community of 17,505 located in northeast Missouri. The community is well known for its superb recreational opportunities and local universities: Truman State University and A.T. Still University. The City Planner is a new position recently incorporated into the local government and has further enabled short and long-range planning in everyday decisions. As the City Planner, I was also the designated staff liaison for the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Kirksville Historic Preservation Commission. Various responsibilities of my role as the City Planner included: managing zoning and subdivision code, reviewing site plans for parking requirements, reviewing rezoning and special use permit applications, collaborating closely with local contractors and developers, and writing staff reports for commissions and City Council.

Area 15 Regional Planning Commission operates through a Council of Government (COG) in Southeast Iowa that provides a variety of planning services to a six-county region. My projects as a Regional Planner included management of three Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and updating a multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan. Daily responsibilities of my position included: maintaining local, state and federal compliance for CDBG projects; maintaining quality and timely communication between our office, grant recipients, and local governments; completing required project documentation efficiently; and responding to inquiries and issues relating to ongoing projects. My extensive customer service background also helped our office maintain sincere relationships with citizens, grant recipients, and local governments.

Traffic Operations Intern

While interning at the Traffic Operations Department, I focused on the creating new GIS data layers which located recently installed Google Fiber infrastructure throughout the city. This included digitizing other various paper files into GIS data layers. Fieldwork consisted of assisting in traffic light maintenance and observing the installation of new pedestrian traffic lights.

As an intern, I focused on creating a redevelopment proposal for the North Scott Avenue Corridor. Using Adobe Illustrator, Google Sketchup and GIS, I evaluated data and produced graphics that were placed in a presentation, which was introduced to the Belton City Council and Belton residents in fall 2013. The proposal included major streetscape improvements, transforming the dormant rail line along the corridor into a bike trail, and anchoring the improvements with a park plaza on the north side of Downtown Belton.

The Urban Planning & Design Program at UMKC is a studio based program that puts an emphasis on physical planning and urban design with community-based projects assigned over the course of the six-semester studio sequence. The focus on physical planning gave me the tools necessary to transform neighborhoods, implement innovations in community design and improve planning practice to meet complex new urban problems of this century.
